Rôdo, my brother, wants to sell our ranch. I can’t even bear the thought of that happening. I pack my bags hastily, not forgetting, however, to throw my poetry and note books over my clothes.
During the bus trip, I found myself in a state of great anxiety and so I made an effort to tune in to that present, even though it was a transitional present, with the land scape rushing through the windows. After a whole day and two transfers, I finally arrive at the little station to catch the old train that crosses our lands, in the middle of the Pampa. My beloved Pampa, eternal, unchanging. When at last the buggy comes to pick me up at the little station, I am already back to my childhood and early youth. Moved and tense, I greet our caretaker, Galdério, whose wrinkles now emerge from an immense gray mustache, and whose pumps remind me of my true universe. I am home. On the way, rocked by the “coxilhas,” and by the singing voice of our male housekeeper, I find myself in a kind of dream, in which, in the background, I hear the noises and music of the fandango and the song of the Nau Catarineta, which I used to hear in childhood, like an anticalanto, if I may say so, that took me out of bed and made me run to the balustrade, to observe the adults’ party, tofollow that wonderful story of the almost cursed ship, which finds its redemption through the unshakable faith of its captain.
Today we talk about THE HERITAGE – The Blood of the Earth, a book by Guilherme Caiuby de Faria published with our publishing house Europe Books.
Europe Books had the pleasure of interviewing the author Guilherme Caiuby de Faria to get to know him better, what was the moment that led him to write his book THE HERITAGE – The Blood of the Earth, as well as the messages he wants to communicate through his book.
Below you can find our interview. Take a seat and enjoy your reading!!!
- What was the moment that led you to write your book?
After the death of my Vati (Dad) on our farm in the Pampas of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, where the plot of my autobiographical novel would take place four years later, I was living in São Paulo, in the Jardins region (where I met Guilherme de Faria, my literary discoverer), where I moved in a kind of self-exile that I imposed on myself due to the anguish of losing my dear father. Knowing about the plans of my family, especially my sister Solange and our brother-in-law Geraldo, I returned to the South, alarmed, to try to save our farm: our lands, the mansion and the Welt vineyard. The true saga that followed made me remember that tumultuous episode of my life years later, describing it in the novel A Herança, two years later, in 2004.
- What are the crucial themes of your book?
The crucial themes are loyalty to the land and memories of my happy childhood, love for my father (Vati) and his legacy of love, wisdom and culture, and for my brother Rôdo, adventurous and daring, citizen of the world and skilled player. But also vital enthusiasm, love for Life and Art, and faith in the higher destiny that should guide people especially when they are artists.
- What is the message you want to communicate to your readers?
Vital enthusiasm, passion for a just cause, for love, for Life and Art. And unshakable Faith in a higher and just Destiny.
- Which authors of the present and/or past do you take as a model?
I don’t have specific models, but I was shaped as an artist by universal culture, the great writers of the past, , by my father’s immense classical library on the ranch, and by his wise guidance on the path of reading.
- Are you working on a new writing project that you can tell us about?
I am currently working on and translating into English the second volume of THE HERITAGE, entitled “The Vineyard of Dionysus”, where the villain (Geraldo) reappears and my struggle becomes even more dramatic.
