- What prompted you to the writing of your book?
Marriage is something almost everyone dreams of, yet so many couples struggle once they’re actually in it; not because they don’t love each other, but because no one ever teaches them the practical, everyday skills it takes to sustain a relationship. I noticed this pattern repeatedly, in the lives of couples around me: strong beginnings followed by slow erosion, simply because nobody prepared them for the ordinary storms of married life i.e. misunderstandings, financial pressure, exhaustion, or the quiet fading of intimacy over time. I wanted to write something that moved beyond the romantic idea of marriage and spoke honestly to the real work involved in keeping it alive because I believe that there is always a solution to marital problems. Drawing on research and observation, I set out to create a practical guide couples could actually apply i.e. something that addresses communication, conflict, emotional closeness, and personal growth within the relationship. Ultimately, Eternal Bonds was born out of a desire to help couples build marriages that don’t just survive, but genuinely thrive, season after season.
- What are the crucial themes of your work?
Eternal Bonds is structured around several interconnected themes that together form a complete picture of what it takes to sustain a marriage. Communication sits at the very foundation i.e. the ability to truly listen, speak honestly, and understand your partner without assumption. From there, the book explores emotional intimacy and closeness, examining what it looks like when it’s present, and the warning signs when it’s missing. Conflict resolution is another central theme, addressing the common sources of friction in marriage i.e. money, parenting, sexual compatibility, and power imbalance — along with practical tools for working through them constructively. The book also touches on balancing work and daily life, maintaining self-esteem within a relationship, and planning a future together with intention. Tying everything together is the extended metaphor of marriage as a garden: something beautiful and productive, but only if it’s consistently tended. Neglect it, and it withers; nurture it, and it flourishes indefinitely. That image captures the book’s overarching message i.e. that a strong marriage isn’t a matter of luck, but something deliberately built and cared for (See your marriage like a garden).
- What is the message you want to convey to the readers?
The central message of Eternal Bonds is that a strong marriage isn’t something that happens by chance; it’s something couples build and maintain through consistent, intentional effort. Every marriage will face storms: financial strain, misunderstandings, exhaustion, resentment, and moments of real doubt. What determines whether a marriage survives those storms isn’t the absence of hardship, but the strength of the foundation beneath it i.e. trust, honest communication, emotional closeness, and a willingness to keep showing up for one another, even when it’s difficult. I also want readers to understand that individual self-esteem matters just as much as the partnership itself; you cannot pour into a marriage from an empty cup, so nurturing your own identity and confidence is not selfish, but essential. Ultimately, I want couples to walk away seeing their marriage as a journey and the way I describe it in the book — as a garden. It requires daily tending, patience, and care, but when nurtured consistently, it has the capacity to flourish and deepen for a lifetime.
- How did you choose the title of your book?
Eternal Bonds reflects the core idea running through the entire book i.e. marriage is meant to be a lasting, unbreakable connection, but one that only remains strong through continuous, deliberate efforts. The word “eternal” speaks to permanence and commitment, while “bonds” captures the deep emotional and spiritual connection that ties two people together over a lifetime. I wanted a title that strikes the heart with optimism and that felt aspirational without being naive i.e. acknowledging that lasting love is possible, while also hinting that it requires real work to maintain. The subtitle, Navigating the Journey of Marriage with Strength and Intimacy, was chosen to highlight the two qualities I believe matter most in a marriage: strength, meaning resilience through difficult seasons, and intimacy, meaning the genuine closeness that must be protected and renewed over time. Together, the title and subtitle set the tone for the entire book — practical guidance wrapped around the deeper truth that love, when properly tended, can truly last a lifetime.
- Can you tell us more about your next literally work?
Yes; I’m currently trying to develop a new book titled Habits of the Heart. Though the title speaks to the heart but the book is really about the mind — the everyday mental and emotional habits that shape how we think, react, and grow as individuals. It explores the thought patterns we’re meant to cultivate, such as gratitude, discipline, resilience, and self-awareness, as well as the ones we need to consciously release, like negative self-talk, fear-based thinking, comparison, and resentment. Rather than promising overnight transformation, the book emphasizes that meaningful change happens gradually, through daily choices, reflection, and lived experience. In many ways, Habits of the Heart continues the underlying philosophy of Eternal Bonds; that real growth, whether within a marriage or within your own mind, comes from consistent, intentional practice rather than luck or chance. My hope is that readers carry in their hearts practical tools for reshaping their thought patterns and building healthier, more resilient minds, one small daily habit at a time.
Europe Books thanks the author Damian Iriogbe once again for taking the time and answering our questions. We are really pleased to have walked alongside him on the editorial path that led to the publication of his book Eternal Bonds.
To you, my dear reader, may this book be a source of reflection for you regarding the bond you choose to build with your partner, reflecting on the commitment that both must necessarily put in from different points of view to allow this journey together to be lived to the fullest, cultivating it day after day in every gesture that is made.
So, my dear reader, all I have to say is to enjoy your reading!
