Pakpahan to get to know him better, what prompted him to the writing of his autobiographical book GROWING PAINS WITH INDONESIA Eight Decades of Resilience, as well as how he felt to “read” his life experiences on the pages of his book.

- What prompted you to write your autobiographical book?
The impulse to write this autobiographical book grew from a realization that my personal journey has been closely intertwined with Indonesia’s national transformation. Over decades of public service, legal reform initiatives, and international engagement, I witnessed firsthand how the country navigated crises, uncertainty, and change. These were not isolated events, but part of a broader narrative of resilience and adaptation. At a certain point, I felt a responsibility to document these experiences—not as a record of personal achievement, but as a reflection on how a nation learns and evolves through its challenges. Writing became a way to connect memory with meaning, and individual experience with collective history. Ultimately, the book is both a memoir and a testimony. It seeks to preserve insights that may help future generations better understand Indonesia’s journey, and perhaps navigate their own roles within it with greater awareness and purpose.
- What would you like to hear from your readers?
What I would most value hearing from readers is not simply that they enjoyed the book, but that it resonated with their own understanding of Indonesia’s journey. I hope they find in its pages reflections of shared experiences—the struggles, uncertainties, and resilience that have shaped the nation. More importantly, I hope the book encourages thoughtful reflection. If it helps readers see governance, leadership, and national development with greater clarity and balance, then it has fulfilled an important purpose. I would especially welcome responses from younger generations—whether the book inspires them to feel a sense of responsibility to contribute to Indonesia’s future with courage, integrity, and wisdom. Ultimately, I hope readers engage with the book not merely as a narrative of the past, but as an invitation to participate in an ongoing conversation about the country’s direction and its possibilities.
- What are the crucial themes of your book?
The book brings together several interconnected themes that reflect Indonesia’s long and complex journey. At its core is resilience—the nation’s capacity to endure and adapt through decades of political, economic, and social upheaval. Another central theme is governance, particularly the evolving balance between authority, accountability, and the courage required to act in the public interest. Closely related is the role of law and institutions, which can both enable progress and, at times, constrain it when not properly aligned with purpose. The management of natural resources also features prominently, highlighting the challenge of translating national wealth into equitable and sustainable welfare. Finally, the book explores national identity and unity—how diversity remains both a source of strength and a continuing test. Together, these themes form a narrative of growth that is imperfect, often challenging, but consistently forward-looking.
- How did it feel to “read” your life experiences on the pages of your book?
Reading my own life experiences on the pages of the book was both humbling and deeply reflective. It felt as though I was revisiting the past not only as a participant, but also as an observer—seeing connections and meanings that were not always clear at the time. Some passages evoked a sense of gratitude, particularly when recalling difficult periods that ultimately led to growth or unexpected opportunities. Others brought back the weight of decisions made under uncertainty, when outcomes were far from guaranteed. There is also a certain vulnerability in putting one’s experiences into writing, knowing they will be read and interpreted by others. Yet overall, the process was meaningful and even restorative. It became a dialogue between past and present, allowing me to understand the journey not as a series of isolated events, but as a coherent and purposeful whole.
- Are you working on any new writing projects?
Yes, I am currently working on several new writing projects that extend the themes explored in this book. One focuses on governance and institutional reform in Indonesia, examining how law, policy, and leadership can be aligned to strengthen accountability without undermining effective decision-making. The title is “Fearless Governance”. Another project explores natural resource governance through a constitutional lens, addressing how Indonesia’s wealth can be managed in ways that are both sustainable and equitable for present and future generations. I also continue to develop reflective writings, including memoir and devotional pieces inspired by personal and spiritual experiences. This one is titled “Constitutional Stewardship.” These works complement each other: one emphasizes the need to restore courage in governance, while the other provides a constitutional framework for responsible and sustainable stewardship. Together, they reflect my continuing commitment to contribute to Indonesia’s institutional and intellectual development.
