Europe Books had the pleasure of interviewing the author ANDREINA WONSCH to get to know her better, where she found the inspiration to write MRS. DAISY TEAPOT AND HER PRECIOUS ONES, as well as what parents and children will understand through her stories.

- Where did you find the inspiration to write a children’s book?
I have written all my life, since I was a child, especially poetry. I wrote this book about 25 years ago when I still lived in the USA. My son had left for college and I was missing him very much. I think in a way Mrs Daisy was a bit of a recap of my own motherhood, of the values that I instilled in my son, of the importance to have self-confidence, the importance of friendship, kindness, empathy, which are the messages that you find in the stories of my book. In some way, the inspiration came from a mother who enjoyed reading stories to her son.
- How important do you think illustrations are in a childrens’ book?
I think they are very important. Young children today, more than ever, need to read real books, not electronic devices and also to interpret the stories. It’s important that they have a point of view about what they read. Literature is good for their minds, but images are a good way to bring them back to the heart of the story, if their concentration wanders off. Sometimes we lose focus while reading, and pictures have a way to redefine things. Images can help them to fully understand what they are reading, I think.
- What would you like to hear from your young readers?
That they love Mrs. Daisy and that they are having lots of fun with her and all the other characters. I’m really hoping that it’s a book that they will come back to over and over. I would like to hear that the messages in each story gives the children something to think about, and that Mrs. Daisy is a good example of how to stay positive.
- What will parents understand through your stories?
Well, I’m not sure about understanding, but hopefully they will spend time reading the book with their little ones, reading and discussing about their thoughts and opinions. Children need to be heard and they need to express their feelings, so reading a book is the perfect opportunity to let them speak their minds.
- Are you working on new writing projects that you can tell us about?
I have already written a manuscript that is actually not for children. I love animals very much and the story is about the life of my dog, a lovely and funny dachshund. He had a very bad start at the hands of a person who abused him and ultimately tied him to a tree and abandoned him in the woods. Fortunately, he was found and saved in a refuge. I have a lot of admiration and respect for the people who give their lives to care for abused and abandoned animals. Animal shelters are filled with humans who work hard for the cause with very little recognition. This book would be to honor them and thank them for all that they do for unhappy and sick animals. The title of the manuscript is “Zorro The Sausage Dog” in case it’s ever published.
