  • What prompted you to write your book?

Laughter is often perceived as an ordinary reaction that passes unnoticed in everyday life. Yet over time, I came to realize that people reveal themselves most clearly when they laugh. In those moments when control loosens and defenses fall away, laughter discloses a great deal about the underlying structures of human behavior. This realization led me to consider laughter not merely as an emotional expression, but as a phenomenon with its own functional and structural dimensions. I also became aware that laughter is shaped by an individual’s inner beliefs. Situations in which one person laughs at a joke while another feel offended illustrate precisely how this behavior is molded by the subject’s internal convictions. Consequently, laughter is not only a biological or social reflex; it is also an expression of subjective judgments and personal assumptions. Although the functionality of laughter is shaped by different sociocultural relationships, I realized that it ultimately rests on subjective perception. My motivation for writing this book emerged precisely from this insight. Questions such as what laughter does, and how it acquires meaning both individually and socially, occupied my thoughts for a long time. What Is Laughter? The Functional Structure of Laughter is the product of this sustained process of reflection. My aim was not to romanticize or oversimplify laughter, but to examine its place in human experience in a careful, layered, and nuanced manner.

  • Which of your personal life experiences are reflected in the book?

The book does not proceed through personal anecdotes or fictional narratives; nevertheless, my life experiences significantly nourished its intellectual background. I observed that laughter creates a sense of social belonging and is shaped within the framework of cultural norms. In some contexts, laughter is excluded; in others, it is welcomed or even regarded as a refined means of communication. In certain situations, subjective will is shaped by an individual’s capacities and inner beliefs. Unexpected laughter emerging in moments of strain, nervous laughter during tension, or reactions suppressed in social settings revealed to me that laughter cannot be explained solely through joy. At times, laughter appears not as a form of relief, but as a way of coping. Such observations guided the construction of the book’s theoretical framework. My own experiences, though not explicitly narrated, form an underlying layer that can be sensed between the lines. In this sense, personal experience does not stand at the center of the text, but remains constantly present in its background. While attempting to understand the complex role of laughter in human life, I consciously drew upon the sensory and affective knowledge that lived experience provides.

  • How would you describe your writing style?

I would describe my writing style as an attempt to balance analytical thought with intuitive and sensory expression. The subjects I address are inherently conceptual and theoretical; however, I do not wish to reduce language to a purely academic instrument. I value the reader’s ability to engage with the text not only intellectually, but also emotionally. For this reason, I strive to leave room for resonance as much as for clarity, and for association as much as for precision. While dissecting concepts, I take care not to sever their connection to lived human experience. For me, a strong text is one that invites reflection while still holding the reader within its flow. In this book, my aim was to examine laughter in a layered way without turning it into a cold object of analysis or romanticizing it.

  • What does “laughter” mean to you?

For me, laughter is one of those rare moments when the body speaks before thought. It is often unfiltered, uncontrolled, and remarkably honest. When people laugh, they struggle to conceal themselves, which makes laughter a powerful indicator. In this sense, laughter offers valuable clues not only to individual emotional states, but also to social structures. When, where, and how we laugh varies across societies—and what we cannot laugh at is just as meaningful. Laughter can be a release, a defense, a way of coping with life, or a quiet form of resistance. This layered nature prevents laughter from being merely an emotional reaction for me. It feels like a small yet intensely concentrated expression of the relationship humans establish with the world.

  • Are you currently working on a new writing project you can tell us about?

Writing, for me, is neither a scheduled nor an obligatory act. When I bind myself to a specific project or timeline, I feel that writing loses its natural quality. This is not a mode of working that suits me. The impulse to write usually emerges as an inner necessity. When a thought lingers in my mind, gains weight, and demands expression, writing begins on its own. For this reason, rather than speaking of a concrete project at the moment, I find myself in a state of listening and reflection. Writing is not a pressure to produce, but a moment of need. When that need arises authentically, the direction of the text reveals itself naturally.
